Our Organisation

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue isn't just one of the biggest fire and rescue services in Europe - it's one of the best.

The 3,683 members of staff who make up this great organisation are all working to realise one common vision: to make our communities safe places to live, work and visit.

Our organisation is headed up by Chief Officer Brian Sweeney and Deputy Chief Officer Eileen Baird, who are supported in their work by the Directorate leads of the Corporate Management Team.

Our Service is managed centrally, from our Hamilton HQ, and locally through our nine Area Commands.

Our frontline starts at our Operations Support Centre in Johnstone, which handles all emergency 999 requests. Our Operations Support staff are trained to respond quickly and professionally to all emergency calls and once crews have been mobilised, are in constant touch with firefighters at the incident scene.

Our 3018 firefighters are spread across Strathclyde and include 614 Retained Duty Service staff and 301 Volunteer personnel, who provide crucial emergency response cover for our more remote regions.

Our Service is administered by the Board of Strathclyde Fire & Rescue whose 34 members are drawn from the 12 unitary authorities that make up Strathclyde and who fund this service.

Community Safety

LewisRamsaySml.jpgLed by Assistant Chief Officer Lewis Ramsay.

Our Community Safety  Directorate works with partner agencies such as education and social work departments, the police and health authorities, to assess the likelihood and impact of fire and other emergencies and to identify those most likely to be affected by them. Much of our work focuses on detailed research and analysis of previous fire and rescue data, which provides the evidence base for the development of risk reduction initiatives.

Our Community safety work is focused on the two key areas of engagement and enforcement and includes our specialist teams of fire safety professionals.
