Strathclyde's location in the UK

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue is one of the biggest in Europe, situated in the west of Scotland in the UK.

Its geographical area covers almost 14,000 square kilometres (about 5,500 square miles). The area includes 23 inhabited islands and has a coastline longer than that of France. Approximately 2.4 million people live in over 930,000 households in the area, ranging from remote crofts and hamlets to Scotland's biggest city, Glasgow.

One of the major advantages of the size of SFR is its ability to enjoy economies of scale. These economies don't just relate to the purchasing of equipment, but also to the provision of training, the standardising of procedures, and the delivery of common support services.

However, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue believes that it is essential to remain close to the communities that it serves, so its core functions have been devolved to ten Areas.

Areas within Strathclyde Each Area is responsible for meeting SFR's obligations to the Fire Authority and for applying policies according to the needs of the Area.
