Also within the information pack is an employer release form and eyesight form that must be completed and returned to your Area HQ asap. Please note, we are working to tight timescales on this recruitment drive in order to get people trained as quickly as possible. Therefore, if you submit your application as soon as you can, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue will endeavour to complete your selection process within a 6 week period.

Firefighters in the Retained Duty System (RDS) are individuals who live or work close to specific community fire stations and can commit to providing an emergency response service for that station.

Most of them are women and men whose primary employment is in another field, but in addition to that, they provide the same range of emergency service as their full time firefighter colleagues in some of Strathclyde's smaller towns and rural villages.

As a Firefighter (RDS) your role would be challenging and demanding. There are stressful and hazardous situations to be faced and you will be required to deal with these while providing comfort and reassurance to members of the community. You may be involved in Community Fire Safety Initiatives within your local area to help prevent emergencies occurring.

You must be available to respond to emergency calls from your home, or place of work (by employer agreement), at any time of the day or night within 5 minutes of emergency call-outs, however, if you do not meet these requirements your application may still be considered. To ensure you maintain the relevant knowledge and skills required for the role, you will be required to attend your station for a 3 hour session each week. In return you will be paid a retainer fee along with additional payments for every incident and training night you attend.

To become an RDS Firefighter, you must:
• Be 18 years of age or over
• Be Physically fit and in good health
• Have good unaided vision and colour perception
• Be seriously interested in helping to provide an invaluable emergency service for your local community
• Have the express permission of your primary employer to become an RDS Firefighter

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue is an Equal Opportunities employer and encourages applications from all sectors of the community. In addition we are committed to the Double Tick Initiative and offer a guaranteed interview to any applicant who considers him / herself to be disabled and who meets the minimum requirements for the post.

Closing Date: Sunday 2 October 2011 at Midnight.
