Six rescued from tenement fire
A fire in the basement area of a 6 storey tenement building led
to the rescue of 6 residents from upper storey windows of the
property this afternoon.
Fire crews from Yorkhill and Maryhill Community Fire Stations
were mobilised to the report of a fire at Gray Street in Glasgows
West End at 13:45 hrs this afternoon.
On arrival at the scene the Incident Commander was faced with a
well developed fire and immediately tasked his crews to extinguish
the fire and ensure that all residents were safe and accounted for
at the scene.
Due the intense volume of acrid smoke engulfing the affected common
close area 10 firefighters were donned in breathing apparatus to
combat the exacting conditions, extinguish the flames and carry out
a systematic search of the premises.
A decision was taken by the Incident Commander to utilise a
combination of fire service ladders and the platform from one of
the attending aerial rescue pumps to safely guide and lower the 6
alarmed residents to ground level. None of the residents required
any treatment or onward transportation to hospital by the ambulance
crews on hand.
Strathclyde Police assisted the fire service in the traffic
management of the immediate area.
At the height of the incident there were 30 firefighters in
attendance. The fire is now under control with fire crews deploying
specialist ventilation equipment to return the scene to
normality.
The cause of the fire is presently unknown and there is no further
information available at this time.
