SFR MARKS KILBIRNIE STREET TRAGEDY
Today marked the 38th anniversary of the Kilbirnie Street fire
which claimed thelives of seven members of Glasgow Fire
Service.
To mark this poignant occasion, a wreath laying ceremony took
place at the Necropolis, overlooking Glasgow Cathedral. The
ceremony was attended by families, friends and colleagues of
the deceased firemen.
Among those also attending were Assistant Chief Officer Lewis
Ramsay and representatives of the Fire Fighters Charity,
Strathclyde Fire & Rescue Retired Employees Association, the
Aye Ready Club, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue Preservation Group
and the Fire Brigades Union.
The Kilbirnie Street fire took place in the premises of a cash
and carry warehouse at Tradeston on the south side of Glasgow. Six
of the firefighters who died had entered the building to rescue a
colleague who had been trapped by falling debris. All seven died
when the fire suddenly became a raging inferno.
The seven firemen who died were Divisional Officer Andrew P
Quinn, Leading Fireman Alistair Crofts, Fireman Iain R Bermingham,
Fireman Allan Finlay, Fireman William M Hooper, Fireman Duncan A M
McMillan and Fireman James W Rook.
