Fatal fire in Glasgow
Fire crews from Polmadie and Calton Community Fire Stations were
mobilised to a reported house fire in Caledonia Road in the Gorbals
district of Glasgow shortly before noon today.
On arrival the incident commander was confronted by a fire in a
maisonette type residence within the tenement block. The incident
commander having established that an occupier was still within the
dwelling tasked firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, to enter
the house for rescue and firefighting purposes.
The crews attempted a rescue and fought their way through
intense heat and smoke. Tragically an elderly male perished at the
scene.
One firefighter suffered slight burns during the course of the
incident and has been taken to hospital for treatment by attending
ambulance crews.
Fire crews also evacuated residents from adjacent premises as a
precautionary measure.
The cause of the fire will be investigated jointly by
Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and the Police. There is no further
information available at this time.
