Recycling Plant Fire
At around 1420 hrs this afternoon fire appliances from Ayr,
Stewarton, Kilmarnock and Dreghorn Community Fire Stations attended
a call to a fire in a local authority run metal recycling plant
just off Irvine Road, Kilmarnock.
At the height of the fire, fire fighters wearing breathing
apparatus sets used several main fire fighting jets and at one
point were assisted in their efforts with water directed onto the
fire from a high reach appliance.
The nearby golf course and two residential properties were
evacuated as a precaution against suspected asbestos particles in
the smoke plume blowing in their direction.
Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Technical Support Unit and Fire
Investigation Team were also in attendance.
Appliances are still at the scene and preliminary investigation
have been started to try to identify the cause of the fire.
There is no further information at this time.
