Fire Crews from Govan Community Fire Station were mobilised
shortly before 6:30 this evening to a reported fire in a scrap
metal merchants at King George V docks in Glasgow's south side.
The crews arrived to find an extremely deep seated fire within
the smouldering mass of scrap metal which was producing large
volumes of thick smoke.
The Incident Commander having tasked his crews to attack the
fire was hampered by the poor mains water supply and immediately
called for additional resources to overcome this difficulty. The
additional appliance, mobilised from Renfrew Community Fire
Station, was deployed to supplement the water supplies by lifting
water from the adjacent River Clyde.
An onsite mobile excavator was also utilised to grab, break down
and disperse the enormous the pile of metal and allow the fire
crews to reach the seat of the fire and ensure there was no fire
spread to any nearby structures.
Strathclyde Fire & Rescue expect to remain at this incident
for the next few hours.
