Oban Simulated Crash
Strathclyde Fire & Rescue will be hitting home the
consequences of speeding and lack of concentration on Friday 5th
March at 7pm when they will stage a realistic car crash in the
Tesco car park, Oban.
The crash scenario is the fourth of six to be rolled out across
Argyll & Bute.
Known as the 'staged real-time crash scenario', people can see
how the firefighters arrive at the scene, assess the situation and
remove the injured people from the wreckage.
The crash scene will involve all the emergency services pulling
together to save two young people, one of whom will be trapped in
the car and the other dies.
The aim is to make people stop and think hard about their
driving and hopefully reduce the amount of collisions and
fatalities, on Argyll and Bute's roads. It is aimed at all drivers
but in particular young drivers and those who are thinking about,
or are learning to drive.
Strathclyde Fire and Rescue will bring two educational units,
the Alpha Appliance, a converted fire engine with external video
screens, and the mobile information unit which can hold up to 30
people at a time to view the short presentation on road safety.
Strathclyde Fire & Rescue personnel will be on hand to explain
the dangers and to answer any questions after the scenario.
Argyll and Bute's Road Safety Officer will be on hand to
demonstrate the importance of installing your child seat correctly
to avoid injury in the event of a collision.
This interactive approach has and continues to demonstrate a
willingness by drivers to understand the dangers of road traffic
collisions and how they may be avoided.
The Community Firefighters will visit the sixth year pupils
before the crash scenario to deliver a presentation on how they can
improve their driver's skill and observation with the view to road
safety. The pupils will be informed of the dangers and consequences
of bad driving practices.
