Serious industrial blaze
Strathclyde fire and rescue is currently attending a blaze at a
large converted industrial premise in the Riverside area of
Irvine.
The building at Riverside Way, contains a substantial quantity
of plastics and other materials which are generating large volumes
of thick, acrid smoke.
Fire crews were alerted around 02:40 hrs this morning and on
arrival were already faced with a large established fire. Crews
from Dreghorn and Kilmarnock as well as High reach and specialist
appliances are currently battling to control the blaze.
Early difficulties with gaining full access to the site are now
being resolved allowing high volume water monitors to be utilised
to full effect.Collapse of the building's roof is partially
shielding the seat of the fire from the water jets, allowing the
large volumes of smoke to continue to be produced.
This smoke may be affecting the Drybridge, Gatehaead and some
parts of Kilmarnock. If affected, residents are advised to stay
indoors and keep their windows closed.
Some local road diversions have been established by Strathclyde
police.
Strathclyde fire and rescues resources will be required at the
scene for several more hours.
There is no further information at this time.
