Fire in Govan
Strathclyde Fire & Rescues control centre in Johnstone
mobilised fire appliances from Govan, Pollok and Maryhill Community
Fire Stations in response to numerous reports of a major fire in
Fairley Street in Govan shortly before 8am this morning.
The appliances arrived at the scene and were confronted by an
extremely well developed fire in a yard at the rear of Fairley
Street. The blaze had already engulfed the single storey unoccupied
building of approximately 75m x 20mm within the yard.
The fire was producing vast volumes of thick black acrid smoke
which was rising hundreds of feet into the air over the south of
Glasgow.
The incident Commander immediately ordered on additional
supporting resources and he set his crews about tackling the fire
and evacuating the residential premises of Fairley Street and Ibrox
Terrace to the south of the fire.
Such was the ferocity of the blaze that residential properties
also became involved in fire.
The main fire in Fairley Street was brought under control
utilising a combination of ground and hand held branches as well as
compressed aid foam.
The fire in the residential premises of Ibrox Terrace was
extinguished by fire crews, wearing breathing apparatus, using hand
controlled branches.
At the height of the incident there were about 60 fire service
personnel on the incident ground. There are no reported injuries to
either members of the public or emergency service personnel.
The fire service were greatly assisted by Strathclyde Police in
the evacuation of the surrounding residential properties as well as
traffic and cordon management.
The fire service will be in attendance for some considerable
time and the cause of the fire will be determined via a joint
investigation between Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and Strathclyde
Police.
There is no further information available at this time.
