Weekend incident overview

Over 300 calls this weekend kept our firefighters busy.

These calls were made up of 126 fires, 153 false alarms and 37 special services.

Here is a brief overview of some of the calls:

  • On Friday afternoon, crews from Paisley and Renfrew were called to attend an oil spillage on the M8 motorway which resulted in the slip road at St James Interchange being closed. The crews worked with their police colleagues to make the scene safe for other road users whilst the relevant partner agencies undertook the clean up process.
  • Just after 8.10pm crews from Lesmahagow and Douglas were called to a road traffic incident on Carlisle Road in Lesmahagow. It had been reported that a car had left the road and struck a wall or lamp-post trapping the driver. On arrival at the scene crews found that there were still several people within the vehicle. Using Lucas cutting equipment, firefighters were able to remove 2 rear seat passenger casualties who were transported to hospital by ambulance. A front seat passenger was removed by air ambulance to the Southern General Hospital.  Tragically, another male casualty was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Shortly before midnight, crews from Port Glasgow were called to a fire in a ground floor cellar of a five storey building. Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters fought the blaze using a hose reel jet. Two male casualties were treated at the scene by attending ambulance personnel. 
  • In the early hours of Saturday morning, crews from Cumnock attended a house fire in the town. Firefighters rescued one male casualty from a second storey flat and administered first aid at the scene before he was transferred to hospital. Two adults and one child casualty were rescued from the top floor flat.
  • On Saturday afternoon at 2.16pm, crews from Port Glasgow attended a road traffic collision on Ardmore Road in the town,. The incident involved a car and a single decker bus. One male casualty was treated at the scene by firefighters. Two male casualties were taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital to receive treatment for their injuries.      
  • Late on Saturday night crews from Barrhead and Paisley were called to an incident at a quarry near to Fereneze Golf Club in Barrhead. It had been reported that two people were in trouble after having fallen a considerable way down the quarry. Firefighters worked with their police and ambulance colleagues at the scene and one female casualty was airlifted to the Southern General Hospital by an RAF Sea King helicopter. One male casualty was rescued from a ledge approximately 50 metres down.
