A total of 89 incidents yesterday including 26 fires, 10 special services and 52 false alarms.

Here is a brief snapshot of a couple of these incidents.

  • Retained Duty System (RDS) crews from Kilbirnie and Beith attended a fire in the ground floor of a block of tenement flats in Kilbirnie. On arrival, it was discovered that the fire had originated in the electrical wiring system within the plasterboard cavity walls of the living room. Fires of this nature present particular problems as they can quickly spread vertically and horizontally throughout the building unseen.  Firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to monitor the roof space and wall cavities and contain the fire. Thankfully all persons were accounted for as firefighters and police quickly evacuated the residents of the all the flats in the property. Crews were on the scene for several hours to ensure that all hotspots had been fully investigated and extinguished.
  • Shortly after 5pm crews from East Kilbride attended a four car road traffic collision in the Calderwood area of the town. No one was trapped in their vehicles so firefighters worked with police to make the scene safe. One male casualty was transferred to Hairmyres Hospital with shoulder and arm injuries.
