Death following fire in Alexandria

At 04:22hrs this morning two fire crews from Dumbarton and Balloch were called to a fire in a ground floor flat at Hillside Avenue, Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire.

Upon arrival, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire and, together with ambulance personnel, treated one adult male casualty for minor smoke inhalation at the scene.

As the casualty was being treated, further medical complications developed and the casualty was taken by ambulance to the Vale of Leven Hospital.

Strathclyde Police confirmed to fire and rescue personnel at 06:30hrs the fatality of the gentleman involved. The cause of the fatality is yet to be confirmed and the cause of the fire is currently being investigated by Strathclyde Fire & Rescue.

Fire in derelict Glasgow School


At 13:22hrs today Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Operations Support Centre received the report of a fire in the derelict Sighthill Primary School building at Fountainwell Road in the north of Glasgow.

The first fire crews at the scene found a well developed fire within the property.

Forty firefighters are involved in tackling the blaze. No persons are reported. There is no further information at this time.

Fire in former Ayrshire church hall

25 Firefighters were engaged tonight in bringing a blaze in a former church hall, in the Ayrshire town of Maybole, under control.

Fire crews from Maybole and Ayr Community Fire Stations were mobilsed to the scene in the town's Cassillis Road tonight shortly before 9:45 p.m. On arrival the crews had to contend with a well developped fire within the rear section of the church hall roof space.

The initial incident commander commited fire crews,donned in breathing apparatus, to tackle the blaze and contain the fire within the immediate area of the traditional stone built building prior to requesting further supporting resources to attend the incident.

The fire ws brought under control using a combination of main jets and employing an aerial monitor from an attending Aerial Rescue Pump. The incident commander also employed Positive Pressure Ventilating tactics to ensure that the fire did not spread beyond the church hall and involve the adjacent main church building, the former St Cuthberts Church.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue were assisted by the police who dealt with traffic management in the immediate vicinty of the fire and reresentatives from Scottish Power who isolated electrical supplies to the affected buildings.

There will be a Fire Service presence at the scene throughout the night and the cause of the fire will be the subject of a joint Police and Fire Service investigation. There are, thankfully, no reported casualties or injuries associated with this incident.

Six rescued from tenement fire


A fire in the basement area of a 6 storey tenement building led to the rescue of 6 residents from upper storey windows of the property this afternoon.

Fire crews from Yorkhill and Maryhill Community Fire Stations were mobilised to the report of a fire at Gray Street in Glasgows West End at 13;45 hrs this afternoon.

On arrival at the scene the Incident Commander was faced with a well developed fire and immediately tasked his crews to extinguish the fire and ensure that all residents were safe and accounted for at the scene.

Due the intense volume of acrid smoke engulfing the affected common close area 10 firefighters were donned in breathing apparatus to combat the exacting conditions, extinguish the flames and carry out a systematic search of the premises.

A decision was taken by the Incident Commander to utilise a combination of fire service ladders and the platform from one of the attending aerial rescue pumps to safely guide and lower the 6 alarmed residents to ground level. None of the residents required any treatment or onward transportation to hospital by the ambulance crews on hand.

Strathclyde Police assisted the fire service in the traffic management of the immediate area.

At the height of the incident there were 30 firefighters in attendance. The fire is now under control with fire crews deploying specialist ventilation equipment to return the scene to normality.

The cause of the fire is presently unknown and there is no further information available at this time.

Wall collapse in Ayr

Fire Crews are currently in attendance at South Harbour Street in Ayr following the collapse of an elevated retaining wall into a car park area some 30 feet below the structure.

Firefighters from Ayr, Kilmarnock, Bellshill and Easterhouse community fire stations were mobilised to the scene shortly before 6 o'clock this evening and immediately set about making the immediate area safe prior to commencing search operations using the specialist equipment carried on the attending Heavy Rescue and Major Incident vehicles which had been despatched to the scene by Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Control Centre in Johnstone.

Fire crews utilised sounding devices to check for casualties and were assisted in this task by the attendance of their partner agency, Trossachs Search and Rescue, who deployed their trained rescue dogs on site to confirm the service's belief that there had been no casualties as a consequence of the collapsed structure.

The Fire Service have also been assisted greatly by the Police who have closed off the immediate area to traffic and by the local councils building department who have provided and erected temporary fencing to ensure that there is no public encroachment within the hazard area.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue will remain in attendance until they can categorically confirm that there are no casualties at the location and the incident can be handed over to the relevant agencies.

Fatal fire in Clarkston

Fire Crews from Clarkston and Castlemilk Community Fire Stations were mobilised at 10:45 pm tonight to a reported dwelling house fire in the Clarkston area of East Renfrewshire.

On arrival at the scene firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, were immediately tasked to tackle the well developed fire and carry out a search of the affected premises by the Incident Commander.

Having extinguished the fire the crews located an elderly female who had tragically perished within the second storey flat of the tenament property.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated jointly by Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Incident Research and Investigation Team and Strathclyde Police.

Five fire engines tackle blaze in Ayr town centre

At approx 0320 hours this morning Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Operations Control received a call to a fire in the ground floor of a 3 storey mid terraced row of shops within the Sandgate area of Ayr town centre.

Two fire appliances were quickly mobilised from Ayr community fire station. Upon arrival the Incident Commander was faced with a well developed fire within the rear extension of the ground floor.

Additional resources were ordered on to the scene and at the height of the blaze five fire engines from across Ayrshire were in attendance.

The fire was brought under control by eight firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entering the building, using two main jets and a hosereel jet to extinguish the fire. The street was closed off to traffic whilst the fire was being fought.

Fire crews will remain in attendance for some considerable time.

Specialist fire investigation officers from Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Incident Research & Investigation Section (IRIS)are in attendance and will work along with the Police to determine the cause. There is no further information available at this time.

Cattle truck overturns

Fire crews from Girvan and Colmonell Community Fire Stations are currently conducting operations to make the immediate area safe after a cattle lorry left the A77 in South Ayrshire between Ballantrae and Glenapp.

The crews were mobilised by shortly after noon today and on arrival the Incident Commander was confronted by the overturned lorry which was carrying 48 cattle.

The lorry driver was subsequently transported to Stranraer Hospital for treatment but the extent of any injuries is presently unknown.

Fire crews will remain at the scene for some considerable time and are working jointly with the Police, SSPCA and a local vet to bring the incident to a safe and satisfactory conclusion.

The affected section of the A77 has been closed to motorists by the police.

Fire seriously damages Glasgow school

A secondary school on the north side of Glasgow has been seriously damaged by fire.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Operations Control Centre was alerted at 5:35hrs this morning to a fire at St Joan of Arc secondary school in Balmore Road. The first fire crews discovered that part of the first floor of the two-storey building was well alight.

Because of the severity of the blaze, our response was quickly made up to a level two (five fire appliances). About 30 firefighters from Maryhill, Springburn and Yorkhill community fire stations were in attendance and a forward control vehicle from Milngavie was also called in to help co-ordinate the firefighting operation.

The fire was brought under control with the use of three jets and an aerial monitor mounted on the boom of an Aerial Rescue Pump. As a result of the firefighters' actions fire damage was restricted to a computer room, where the fire is believed to have started, and four neighbouring classrooms.

Considerable water damage has been done to the building, however, as a result of a water tank on the roof bursting open.

Glasgow City Council Building Control were called to inspect the building and SFR fire investigators are trying to discover the cause of the fire. There is no further information at this time.

North Ayrshire fire

Twenty five firefighters tackled a fire in the former residential home, Beech House, at Rothesay Court in Skelmorlie, North Ayrshire, last night.

Three fire appliances from Greenock and Skelmorlie community fire stations were mobilised to the substantial and traditionally built 2 storey premises shortly before 10pm. The crews,on arrival,were confronted by a well developed fire which had already spread into the roof space.

The Incident Commander immediately got his crews to attack the fire externally on two fronts before ordering on additional resources. The quick action of the crews ensured that there was no fire spread to the adjacent residential dwellings.

The fire service was assisted by Strathclyde Police who took control of traffic management in the immediate vicinity. At the height of the blaze 1 aerial and 3 ground monitors were employed to quell the blaze.

The cause of the fire is not presently known and the incident is likely to be protracted. There is no further information available at this time.

Chemical incident in Glasgow college

Fire crews from Polmadie Community Fire Station were mobilsed to the reported emission of chemical fumes at the Glasgow College of Nautical Studies just after 7 a.m this morning.

On arrival the Incident Commander was advised that one of the college staff was suffering from the effects of fume inhalation and he ensured that the male casualty was treated by the attending ambulance crews prior to being transported to hospital for a precautionary check up. Two further members of staff who subsequently reported that they were feeling unwell were also transported to hospital some time later, again as a precautionary measure.

Fire crews in breathing apparatus were tasked to ensure that the immediate area was made safe while the Incident Commander evacuated the affected part of the college and cordoned off the immediate area to members of the public.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Scientific advisor attended the incident and carried out a gas monitoring survey of the area to detect any further leak of fumes using specialised equipment carried on the service's Technical Support Unit.

After being satisfied that the area presented no further risk to the public the affected part of the college was declared safe to resume normal activities.

Chemical incident in Glasgow street

Earlier today fire appliances from Yorkhill and Knightswood community fire stations attended a special service call to a release of an unknown chemical from a cylinder in Crathie Road, Glasgow.

On arrival they found three cylinders in the roadway, one of which was releasing a gas. The affected area was cordoned off by Police and Fire Service personnel.

Assistance in identifying the substance was requested by the Officer in Charge. Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Operations Room was set up and a Technical Support Team attended the scene.

It was later confirmed by the Support Team that the cylinders contained an expanding foam solution and were made safe before removal.

Two Police Officers who arrived at the scene before the Fire Service were taken to hospital for a precautionary check up as a result of the gas fumes causing irritation to their eyes.

Homes evacuated because of refuse lorry fire

At approx 12:20 hours today Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Operations Support Centre received a call to a refuselorry on fire in the Clarkston area of East Renfrewshire.

Two pumps were quickly mobilised from Clarkston and Castlemilk community fire stations. Upon arrival, the Incident Commander discovered smoke issuing from the vehicle. The driver of the bin lorry was found to be suffering from the effects of having inhaled fumes.

It was discovered that chemicals had been placed in the domestic wheelie bin. When emptied into the bin lorry, a chemical reaction took place which resulted in a fire.

The driver received medical treatment at the scene and was removed to the Victoria Infirmary by ambulance.

Occupants of homes in the immediate vicinity were evacuated and surrounding householders advised to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors closed. Specialist Hazmat Officers from Strathclyde Fire & Rescue, working closely with Glasgow Scientific Services, conducted tests to identify the chemicals involved.

The Incident was resolved when firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and chemical protection suits, extinguished the fire. The incident was successfully resolved due to the good work of all the agencies involved, namely Strathclyde Fire & Rescue, East Renfrewshire Council's Emergency Planning Officer, Glasgow Scientific Services and Strathclyde Police.

As a precaution, two fire appliances and the Technical Support Unit travelled in convoy site with the bin lorry to the waste disposal site where the contents were removed.
The evacuated occupants were then allowed to return to their homes.

Elderly woman dies in house fire

At 08 07 this morning two fire appliances from Pollok Community Fire Station attended a call to a fire in an end terraced house in Allanton Drive, Cardonald, Glasgow.
It was confirmed on arrival that the elderly female occupier was still in the house.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the affected property and discovered the elderly female. It is with regret that she was found to have died at the scene.
Strathclyde Fire and Rescue's Fire Investigation Team are working with Police to try to identify the cause of the fire.

Six rescued from fire

At approximately 1 o'clock this morning (27/7/09) appliances from Balloch and Dumbarton Community Fire Stations, attended an incident in a flat in the Davidson Street area of Balloch.

On arrival they were met with a very well developed fire with smoke and flames issuing from the property. Firefighters very quickly rescued 3 people from adjoining property using ladders whilst another 3 people were safely led from their flats by other firefighters wearing breathing apparatus. The fire was then brought under control using 2 main firefighting jets.

The incident is still in progress and a cause has yet to be established. A joint investigation between Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and Strathclyde Police will be carried out. There is no further information available at this time.

Gorge Rescue

At 16 00 hrs this evening Fire appliances from Hamilton, Larkhall and Easterhouse community Fire Stations responded to a Special Service to rescue a 13 year old boy.

The boy had fallen from a rope swing 20 m down an embankment into a gorge in Shaw Street Larkhall. Fire fighters wearing harnesses reached the boy and with the assistance of Paramedics and the Police Mountain Rescue Team stabilised his injuries at the scene.

The child was winched to safety by a Royal Navy Air Sea Rescue Helicopter requested by the Fire Service to assist. He was removed from the scene and flown to the Southern General Hospital suffering from multiple injuries.There is no further information at this time

Firefighters come under attack

Firefighters narrowly escaped serious injury tonight when a bottle and a heavy glass ash tray were propelled at them from an upper storey in Dalziel Tower multi-storey flats in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire.

The incident happened at 21:45 hrs this evening as fire crews from Motherwell Community Fire Station responded to tackle a reported fire in the high rise flats. The crews were carrying out their duties when the missiles were launched from above, narrowly missing the astonished firefighters.

Deputy Area Commander Craig Shaw said: "I am appalled that this incident has occurred. Firefighters have enough to contend with without being subjected to this type of mindless violence. It was only by sheer luck that one or more of my firefighters was not seriously injured tonight."

Group Commander Shaw is liaising closely with local Police officers who are currently investigating this unsavoury incident.

Shed fire sparks fuel blaze

A fire which started in a garden shed at the rear of a range of four two storey terraced premises resulted in extensive fire and smoke damage to the dwellings.

Fire Crews from Lanark and Shotts Community Fire stations were mobilised at 13:00 hrs this afternoon to a reported garden shed involved in fire at Longdales in Forth, North Lanarkshire.

On arrival the Incident Commander had to deal with the shed involved in fire in addition to a running fuel fire which contributed to fire spread and the resultant damage to the four premises.

The Incident Commander requested additional resources and this difficult situation was subsquently brought to a satisfactory conclusion by the professional actions of crews, wearing breathing apparatus, utilising a combination of water and firefighting foam to quickly quell the blaze.

Although one resident was treated by ambulance crews for a diabetic attack there were, thankfully, no injuries to firefighters or members of the public.

The immediate area has been cordonned off to allow an investigation into the cause of the incident to be jointly carried out by the Polce and Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Incident Research & Investigation Team.

Fire at Glasgow house construction site

At approx 1937 hours Strathclde Fire & Rescue's operations control received the first of several calls reporting a large blaze at Kelvindale Glade - a new housing development, within the Kelvindale area of Glasgow.

The pre-determined attendance was quickly mobilised from Maryhill Community Fire Station to the scene. Upon arrival the Incident Commander was faced with a well developed fire within a building under construction. The Incident Commander ordered on additional resources to tackle the blaze. At the height of the fire 5 pumps attended from Maryhill, Yorkhill, Knightswood & Cowcaddens community fire stations.

The structure was surrounded by scaffolding, which had started to buckle due to the intensity of the heat from the fire. Defensive firefighting tactics were deployed.
Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Aerial Rescue Pump was used as a water tower to prevent the fire from spreading to an adjacent occupied 4 storey building. This building was evacuated as a precautionary measure due to the potential collapse of the unstable scaffolding.

The cause of the fire will be the subject of a joint investigation by specialist Fire Investigation Officers from Strahclyde Fire & Rescue and Strathclyde Police. There is no further information available at this time.

Aircraft crashes into hillside

At approximately midday today, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue's Operations Support Centre received a call reporting that an aircraft, possibly an RAF Tornado, had crashed into the hillside near the A83 at Cairndow.

Five Fire Appliances, two Major Incident Units with heavy rescue equipment and a Technical Support Unit to deal with any potential hazardous materials and to minimise any environmental impact were mobilised as a result

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue personnel are working alongside personnel from the RAF, the Police and Ambulance Services to deal with this incident and to locate the occupants of the aircraft.

Major fire at scrapyard

At approx 12:15 this morning fire appliances from Renfrew and Paisley Community Fire Stations responded to a fire call in Meadowside Street in Renfrew next to the river Clyde.

On arrival firefighters were faced with a well developed fire in a metal salvage yard adjacent to a large industrial building. The size and severity of the blaze was so intence that additional resources were reqested to assist in dealing with the incident.

Currently 14 fire appliances and 70 firefighters are at the scene using water jets from ground monitors in an attempt to extinguish the fire.

There is no indication at this time as to the cause of the fire. Further information will be released when available.

SCRAPYARD FIRE UPDATE

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue has made good progress in tackling the blaze at the metal salvage yard at Meadowside Street in Renfrew.

Firefighters have managed to save a large industrial building, containing £2 million-worth of equipment, close to the blaze, first reported shortly after midnight. There continues to be 14 pumps and 70 firefighters at the scene and we shall have to maintain a presence at the yard until Monday.

Six rescued from roller coaster

At approximately ten minutes to four this afternoon, Strahclyde Fire & Rescue's Operations Support Centre received a call reporting a problem with a roller coaster ride at M & D's Theme Park within Strathclyde Country Park.

The roller coaster with 6 people on a works funday out were on board. The ride had developed a fault and came to halt at the bottom of a dip, approximately 40 feet above the ground. All of the carriages were in the upright position.

Fire crews from Hamilton, Cambuslang and Parkhead Community Fire Stations attended. The Incident Commander instructed crews to secure the carriages in place, before using the Aerial Rescue pump from Parkhead community fire station, to get Firefighters into position to perform the rescues. This was achieved by releasing the safety harness of each rider and assisting them in to the safety cage of the appliance.

The passengers were brought to the ground two at a time.
5 ladies and 1 gentleman were then examined by ambulance crews, no injuries were sustained.
The relieved passengers thanked the fire crews.

Fire in Coatbridge garage

Fire crews from Coatbridge Community Fire Station were mobilised at half past midnight this morning , as a result of multiple calls received by Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Control Centre, to a garage on fire at Railway Road, Coatbridge, in North Lanarkshire.

The crews were met with an extremely well developed fire and were immediately tasked to attack the blaze externally. Information was quickly received by the Incident Commander that acetylene cylinders were located within the premises. The procedures specific to incidents of this nature were immediately adopted.

Strathclyde Police greatly assisted the service with evacuating the residents of the surrounding dwellings and the implementation of a hazard zone to envelop the area immediately surrounding the garage. Police also ensured the traffic management of the local area.

A series of multi-agency meetings, which also involved the local council emergency planning officer, North Lanarkshire Social Work Department, Network Rail and the Roads Department, met at Coatbridge Fire Station to implement well rehearsed procedures in order to return the situation to normality as soon as they consider it safe to do so.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue will remain at the incident until its conclusion. A joint investigation into the cause of the fire will be carried out by the service's Fire investigation team and the Police in due course.

Fire in former residential home

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Operations Control Centre mobilised fire appliances from Castlemilk Community Fire Station just before 18:30 hours this evening to the former residential care home in Fernhill Road, Rutherglen, following numerous calls reporting that the two storey building was ablaze.

The initial Incident Commander arrived at the scene and was confronted by a well developed fire in the single storey north wing of the premises. The fire, which had already broken through the roof, was immediately tackled externally on two fronts and additional resources were quickly requested to ensure that the blaze would be confined to the affected wing.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue was ably assisted by the police who controlled traffic in the immediate vicinity and closed off part of Fernhill Road.

The fire, which at its height was fought by 40 firefighters, is now under control but the incident will be protracted. The Incident Commander has requested the attendance of Building Control officers to survey the current condition of the unoccupied premises.

The cause of the fire is presently unknown and a joint investigation will be carried out by the police and Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Investigation Team.

Firefighters rescue 8 from Lanark fire

At around 11pm this evening, fire crews from Lanark and Biggar community fire stations attended a report of fire in the Kingsmyre area of Lanark.

On arrival the crews were faced with a well developed fire within the refuse area of a three storey block of flats. More importantly, severe smoke logging of the common close was begining to affect the residential flats it serves. It was quickly established that people were within the flats and required to be rescued.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using a high pressure hosereel jet, quickly extinguished the fire and led residents to safety. In total eight people were rescued including two infants.

No hospital treatment was required, however, six of the occupants were treated for slight smoke inhalation by both firefighters and paramedics from the Scottish ambulance service.

Fatal road crash in Cumnock

At approximately 12:16 hrs today two fire appliances from Cumnock Community Fire Station were mobilised to a road traffic collision involving two private cars on the A76,close to Calton Farm in Cumnock, Ayrshire. On arrival at the incident Strathclyde Fire & Rescue personnel found the two cars had been involved in a head on collision trapping the drivers of both cars and one passenger.

Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to extricate the three trapped people from both vehicles. Unfortunately the male driver of one of the vehicles and the female passenger from the other vehicle were confirmed dead at the scene by the Scottish Ambulance Service. The remaining male driver was removed by ambulance to Ayr General Hospital, suffering from chest injuries.

Blaze severely damages Glasgow South Side Church

Langside Parish Church in Glasgow's South Side was left severely damaged this evening as a result of a fire which spread rapidly along the roof of the single storey building.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's control centre was inundated with calls reporting the incident shortly after 7pm.

Fire appliances were dispatched to the scene from Polmadie and Castlemilk Community Fire Stations. As the crews approached the place of worship flames were already visible from the roof and thick acrid smoke billowed into the surrounding air.

The Incident Commander quickly ensured that the church interior had been succesfully evacuated before deploying fire crews in breathing apparatus to attack the blaze from within the main body of the church in an attempt to prevent any fire spread. The ensuing conditions forced the crews to withdraw from the church interior and adopt external firefighting tactics using both aerial and ground jets.

Police assisted in the control of local traffic and both services advised local residents to remain indoors and keep their windows closed against the possibility of smoke ingress.

At the height of the fire eight fire appliances and 40 firefighters were in attendance. No emergency service personnel or members of the public suffered any injuries.

The fire is now under control but crews will maintain a presence throughout the night before a joint investigation is launched by both Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and the Police into the cause of the blaze.

Farm fire

Fire crews are currently tackling a blaze in an outbuilding at Bankhead Farm near Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire.

Appliances from Coatbridge and Bellshill Community Fire Stations were mobilised to the scene shortly before 10 pm last night and were confronted by an extremely well developed fire which engulfed the entire outbuilding.

The Incident Commander, having ensured that there was no life risk, was severely hampered in bringing the blaze under control due to the very poor water supplies and restricted access for further fire appliances which he requested to extinguish the fire and to ensure that the surrounding farm buildings did not become involved due to fire spread.

Oncoming appliances are being tasked to continuously relay water to the scene from the nearest pressure fed water supply. The duration of the incident will be somewhat extended as a result of these difficulties.

The cause of the fire will be investigated jointly by Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and the Police. There is no further information available at this time.

Truck crashes into restaurant

At 14.19hrs today Strathclyde Fire & Rescue responded to a report of a road traffic collision involving a large goods vehicle at the junction between the A725 and the entrance to Strathclyde park.

Rescue appliances from Hamilton and Easterhouse Community fire station were mobilised and on arrival discovered that the driver of a large goods vehicle had collapsed at the steering wheel causing the vehicle to leave the A725 roadway,mount the grass verge and then collide with a parked vehicle and the wall of the Toby Jug restaurant.

The Incident Commander in conjunction with restaurant staff instigated an immediate evacuation of the affected area during which time it was discovered that a member of the public had sustained leg injuries caused by falling debris from the restaurant wall. Fire Service and Scottish Ambulance personnel administered first aid to the driver of the vehicle and the injured diner both of whom were taken by ambulance to Monklands Hospital.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's specialist Urban Search and rescue team are in attendance to assist building control with any shoring requirements that may be necessary to ensure the buildings stability. There is no further information at this time.

Gas explosion wrecks couple's home

At 19.35hrs on Friday April 17, emergency calls were received by Strathclyde Fire & Rescue’s operations support centre advising of an explosion within a property in the Kirklands area of Renfrew.

Three appliances from Govan and Renfrew were committed to the incident, which did not require any offensive firefighting operations.

Police enquiries into the cause of the blast are continuing along with a joint investigation by officials from Scottish Power, Scotia Gas Networks and Renfrewshire Council.

Two elderly residents who received burns to the upper body area in the incident were conveyed by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where they were detained for treatment to their injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

As a result of the extensive damage caused to the property Renfrewshire Council’s building control department have confirmed that all four properties in the block will now require to be demolished.

Group Commander Kenneth Hankinson, based at Renfrewshire and who took charge of the incident later that evening said: “These two people were extremely lucky to have walked away from such an explosion with the minor injuries they had.”

Fatal fire in Glasgow

Two fire appliances from Easterhouse Community Fire Station were mobilised shortly after 6pm this evening to the report of a fire in a mid-terraced dwelling in the Baillieston area of Glasgow.

On arrival, the incident commander was confronted by a well-developed fire and immediately tasked the fire crews, who were wearing breathing apparatus, to tackle the blaze and commence searching for the occupant who was believed to be still inside the premises.

The crews fought their way through the intense heat and smoke and rapidly extinguished the blaze. The crews located a male in the dwelling and despite the efforts of the attending paramedics the casualty was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.

Strathclyde Police and specialist officers from Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Incident Research and Investigation Section will carry out a joint investigation to determine the cause of the fire. There is no further information available.

Youth rescued from embankment

A 13 year old youth who became trapped after plunging down a 100ft embankment was rescued by personnel from Motherwell Community Fire station this evening.

Fire crews mobilised to Priory Road in Wishaw just after 8pm found the youth lying at the bottom of the embankment in the company of Paramedics who had made their way down the embankment to tend to the casualty.

Crews were deployed by the Incident Commander to descend the embankment in order to stabilise and rescue the youth. The crews carefully extricated the casualty to the top of the embankment under extremely difficult circumstances. The youth was then handed over to the attendant ambulance crew for onward transportation to Wishaw General Hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries.

Bus passengers taken to hospital

At 09:44 hours today Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Operations Support Centre received a call reporting a road traffic collision involving a car and a bus with 20 passengers on board. The collision took place in Hareleeshill Road, Larkhall.

Fire Crews from Larkhall and Hamilton Community Fire Stations were quickly mobilised. Upon arrival, the Incident Commander confirmed that no persons were trapped and deployed fire crews to make the scene safe and assist the Ambulance service. A total of 12 casualties were transferred to the following Hospitals. 9 casualties taken to Wishaw General Hospital, 2 casualties taken to Hairmyres Hospital and 1 taken to Monkland General Hospital.

An investigation in to this incident will be carried out by Strathclyde Police. There is no further information available at this time.

Blaze causes evacuation of 35 homes

At approximately 12:30hrs today Strathclyde Fire & Rescue operations support centre received a call to a fire in a vehicle recovery yard within the Knockentibber area of East Ayrshire.

At the height of the blaze five fire appliances from across Ayrshire attended the scene. Acetylene gas cylinders were involved in the fire as a result of which operational procedures were implemented. This has resulted in a 200 metre hazard zone being identified; the occupiers of about 35 homes have been evacuated for a 24 hour period.

The fire has been extinguished. Strathclyde Fire & Rescue will remain in attendance during the 24 hour cooling period. There is no further information available.

Fire in metal yard

Fire crews from Govan, Paisley and Yorkhill community fire stations were mobilised to a metal recycling yard at 10:30 this morning in King George V Dock on the south bank of the River Clyde.

The quick actions of the initial attending fire crews contained the fire, which had started in a metal fragmentiser unit, and prevented any spread to other areas of the yard.

Additional crews were requested to support firefighting operations and the blaze was quickly brought under control and extinguished by firefighters using two main jets.At the height of the blaze, five fire appliances and additional support vehicles attended the incident.

This is likely to be a protracted incident and Strathclyde Fire & Rescue will remain in attendance to damp down the scene. There is no further information available.

Crash causes major gas leak

At 10:21 today Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's operations control took the first of several emergency calls to a report of a road traffic collision at Mount Pleasant Drive in Old Kilpatrick, West Dunbartonshire.

Two rescue appliances were immediately mobilised from Clydebank Community Fire Station to the incident. On arrival, crews discovered that a private car had collided with a gas distribution substation, causing exposed pipework to rupture. This resulted in a large quantity of natural gas being released into the atmosphere.

With the possible threat of an explosion, and as a precautionary measure, the incident commander in conjunction with Strathclyde Police has evacuated nearby residents from their homes and closed the A82 road.

Transco is currently on scene and is attempting to isolate the leak which may take up to two hours to achieve. Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and Strathclyde Police will remain in attendance and are working closely together with Transco to ensure the incident is contained and the public remains safe.

Major warehouse fire in Cambuslang

At approximately 21:30hrs last night fire crews were called to an incident in Dreams Bed Warehouse in Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire.

On arrival, fire crews were met with a well-developed fire. During the early stages of the incident crews were forced to fight the fire externally due to the intense heat and smoke being produced by the fire.

At the height of the blaze eight fire appliances, including two Aerial Rescue Pumps, were in attendance along with about 50 firefighters. The fire is now under control and fire service appliances have been reduced to three. There was no risk to surrounding properties.

Fire in Dreghorn garage

Main Street Dreghorn in North Ayrshire will be closed off to non-emergency traffic for some time as a result of a fire in a garage workshop which occurred shortly after 2 o'clock this morning.

Fire appliances from Dreghorn Community Fire Station were initially mobilised to the scene and were confronted with a fire which quickly spread to the roof of the garage workshop. The incident commander immediately requested the attendance of additional resources and was informed of the presence of acetylene cylinders within the garage.

External firefighting tactics and recognised procedures for this type of incident are currently being adopted by the 30 firefighters presently at the fire scene.

The incident commander was assisted by Strathclyde Police who co-ordinated the evacuation of local residents to the nearby Townend Community Centre. Police also controlled the movement of all non-emergency traffic in the immediate area after a hazard zone had been set up by Strathclyde Fire & Rescue.

This will be a protracted incident and both emergency services will remain at the scene for up to 24 hours after the fire is extinguished. Consultation between emergency services and the local authority is presently taking place and a joint investigation into the cause of the fire will be undertaken by the Fire Service's Incident Research and Investigation officers and the Police.

Car crashes into house

Firefighters today had to rescue the two occupants of a house in the Ruchill area of Glasgow after a car crashed through the gable wall of the property.

At 11:45hrs fire crews from Maryhill and Easterhouse community fire stations were called to the incident in Mayfield Street. Firefighters discovered that the two occupants of the car had managed to get out of the vehicle; the two, unharmed, occupants of the house had to be rescued from an upstairs room by ladder.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue requested the attendance of Glasgow City Council's Building Control section to check the stability of the building.

Fire Service resources at the scene comprised two rescue pumps from Maryhill Community Fire Station and a Heavy Rescue Vehicle with support pump from Easterhouse Community Fire Station. There is no further information available at this time.

Fire in new-build flats

At 01:52 today Strathclyde Fire & Rescue were called to a building fire at Kilfinan Street in the Lambhill area of Glasgow.

On arrival, fire crews were met with a well-developed fire on three floors of a four-storey block of flats. The building, which was attached to an older tenement property, was a new-build still under construction.

Sixty firefighters were in attendance using fire hoses and an Aerial Rescue Pump (ARP) to fight the fire. The ARP is a new type of fire engine that has an extending ladder and boom that can spray a jet of water onto a fire.

During the firefighting a large section of the building and scaffolding surrounding it collapsed. Residents from 16 flats had to be evacuated for their safety. These people went to neighbours and family; some were able to return to their homes before 03:30am.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, however it is being investigated by specialist fire investigators from Strathclyde Fire & Rescue. There is no further information at this time.

Fire in Kelburn Castle

At approximately 01:40 today Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Operations Support Centre received a call to a fire in Kelburn Castle at Fairlie in Ayrshire.

Fire crews from Largs and Ardrossan community fire stations were quickly mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival the incident commander committed firefighters who wore breathing apparatus and used a hosereel jet and a main jet to tackle the fire.

The fire was in a room on the top floor of a three-storey section of the castle which dates from the 13th Century. The fire had broken through the ceiling and was spreading to the roof space.

Additional resources were ordered to the incident due to the potential of rapid fire spread. The fire was contained and prevented from spreading any further due to the prompt actions and hard work of the first attending crews. Salvage work was quickly undertaken to remove valuable possessions to a safe locations and covers placed over items that could not be moved.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is now being undertaken by specialist officers from the Incident Research and Investigation Section of Strathclyde Fire & Rescue.

Airdrie Fire Rescue

At 7.21pm this evening Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's operations support centre received a call to a flat on fire within an 8 storey building in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire.

Fire crews from Coatbridge and Bellshill community fire stations were quickly mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival crews were informed that the occupier of the flat was still in the building.

A total of 7 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were committed to fight the fire and search for the occupant. A woman was rescued from a third floor bedroom, suffering from severe smoke inhalation.

Firefighters trained to provide trauma care, performed CPR upon the casualty, managing to resuscitate her; this work was continued by colleagues from the ambulance service. She was then transferred to Monk lands General Hospital.

A joint Police and Fire service investigation in to the cause of the fire is now underway. There is no further information available at this time.

Clydebank flat fire

At just after 07:30 today Strathclyde Fire & Rescue was called to a fire in a flat on the 12th floor of Lomond View tower block in Clydebank.

At the scene, the fire crews found the adult male occupier had been rescued by two police officers. The occupier and the police officers were taken to the Western Infirmary suffering from smoke inhalation.

Firefighters from Clydebank and Knightswood community fire stations entered the smoke-filled flat wearing breathing apparatus and extinguished the fire.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by specialist fire investigation officers. There is no further information at this time.

Motherwell fire disrupts rail services

Just before 07:00 Strathclyde Fire & Rescue were called to a fire involving a timber building in a car servicing yard in Orbiston Street, Motherwell.

On arrival the fire crews from Motherwell Community Fire Station discovered a number of cylinders involved in the fire. One of these cylinders was used to store acetylene.

Because of the hazards associated with this gas, firefighters instigated a standard operating procedure. A 200 metre safety cordon was set up around the cylinder to protect fire crews and members of the public from danger. The firefighters will remain in attendance for 24 hours to cool the cylinder before declaring the area safe.

The West Coast main rail line is within this 200 metre cordon and will be closed until 07:00 tomorrow (Friday). A number of small businesses have also had to evacuate their premises until tomorrow.

Officers from Strathclyde Fire & Rescue have met with Network Rail, Strathclyde Police, North Lanarkshire Council and a representative of the occupiers of the site. Communications will be maintained with each of these organisations until the conclusion of the incident.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time and is under investigation.

Glasgow House Fire Rescue

Firefighters have rescued an elderly man from a fire in a top floor flat in Newlands Road on the south side of Glasgow.

The firefighters, from Castlemilk Community Fire Station, who were called out at 10:06 this morning donned breathing apparatus to tackle the fire and carry out the rescue. The man, who was suffering from severe smoke inhalation, was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Gable wall collapses in Dumbarton High Street

At 8pm this evening Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's operations support centre received a call to a report of a building collapse in High Street, Dumbarton.

Fire crews from Dumbarton Community Fire Station along with specialist trained urban search and rescue crews from Clydebank, Bellshill and Easterhouse community fire stations, were quickly mobilised.

Upon arrival, crews discovered that approximately 10 square metres of the sandstone gable end wall of the three-storey tenement building had collapsed, spreading debris below. Luckily no persons were injured.

The occupants of the four flats within the affected property were evacuated as a precaution. An officer from the Building Control Department of West Dunbartonshire Council also attended the scene.

The High Street will remain closed for some considerable time until the structure has been examined and declared safe. There is no further information available at this time.

Three die when car hits house

Fire crews from Motherwell Community Fire Station were mobilised to a reported road accident in the Dalton Hill area of Hamilton shortly before 7.15pm this evening.

On arrival the crews were confronted with the sight of a private car which had collided with a two-storey detached house which was partially collapsed. The crews quickly worked to make the immediate area safe and deal effectively with the incident in addition to liaising closely with the Police and Ambulance services.

Although the residents of the house escaped injury, all three occupants of the vehicle died as a result of the collision.

Strathclyde Police are currently carrying out an investigation into the cause of the accident.There is no further information available at this time.

Rescue from swollen river

Firefighters today rescued two women from a car after it had got stuck in a river.

The fire crews from Kilmarnock and Ayr community fire stations attended the incident in Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock. The two women had tried to cross a ford in a river which had become swollen because of recent heavy rainfall. The car's engine stalled during the crossing and the occupants were unable to leave the vehicle because of the water surrounding them.

Firefighters from Ayr used specialist water rescue equipment to rescue the women, and paramedics gave the women precautionary check-ups. There is no further information at this time.

Dunoon house fire

At 3:20am firefighters from Dunoon Community Fire Station attended a fire in a house in Sandhaven, Sandbank.

On arrival at the incident the fire crews found a well-developed fire in the ground and first floors of the two-storey terraced house. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued the adult occupants by carrying a woman from the ground floor and rescuing her partner by ladder from the upper floor bedroom. The fire was then extinguished with a hose from the fire engine.

Both occupants were taken by ambulance to Dunoon General Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Incident Research and Investigation Section will be at the scene today to investigate the cause of the fire.

Fatal house fire in Motherwell

At 01:45 on Thursday 8th January Strathclyde Fire & Rescue attended a house fire in Crawford Street, Motherwell.

On arrival at the incident the fire crews from Motherwell, Bellshill and Hamilton community fire stations sent firefighters wearing breathing apparatus in to fight the fire and search the premises for the occupier. They were met with a well-established fire in the house.

Firefighters found an elderly female householder on the first floor of the two-storey semi-detached house. Sadly, an attending doctor pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and Strathclyde Police.

Glasgow fire

At 6:20 this evening crews from Maryhill and Yorkhill community fire stations attended a bedroom fire at Westburn Gardens, Glasgow.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued the occupant as their colleagues fought the fire. The adult male was taken by ambulance to the Western Infirmary for a precautionary check-up for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Incident Research and Investigation Section.

Fatal house fire in Glasgow

At 04:49 this morning, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's operations control took the first of several calls to a report of a dwelling house on fire within the Drumchapel area of Glasgow.

Two appliances from Clydebank Community Fire Station were mobilised to the incident. On arrival, crews were met with an intense fire affecting both the ground and first floors of the terraced house. The incident commander was informed that there were persons still within the premises and immediately sent for additional resources which arrived from Knightswood Community Fire Station.

Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus sets were committed to fight the fire and conduct a search of the premises. Regrettably, during the search crews discovered that an elderly male had been overcome by effects of the fire and had perished at the scene.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and Strathclyde Police are currently carrying out a joint investigation into the cause of the fire. There is no further information at this time.

Fire in Greenock tenement

Six residents were taken to hospital early this morning following a fire on a landing of a three-storey tenement property in Drumfrocher Road, Greenock.

Fire crews from Greenock Community Fire Station were mobilised to the premises shortly before 3am this morning. On arrival, crews wearing breathing apparatus, fought their way up through the descending thick, acrid smoke to quickly extinguish the blaze before safely rescuing the distressed occupants and placing them in the care of the attending ambulance crews who subsequently transported them to hospital for precautionary checks.

Lanarkshire farm fire

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's operations support centre received a call to a farm on fire on the outskirts of Stonehouse at 01:00hrs on Saturday 3 January.

The first crew in attendance, from Strathaven Community Fire Station,were confronted with a large quantity of hay and some farm machinery on fire, with the flames spreading towards a diesel storage tank. The incident commander requested additional resources to attend due to poor water supplies at the location.

At the height of the blaze five fire engines from across Lanarkshire attended, setting up a water relay from the nearest suitable mains water supply. Cattle from surrounding sheds have been moved to adjacent fields away from the fire as a precaution.

Bishopbriggs fire fatality

On Wednesday 31 December at 21:40hrs Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's operations support centre received a call alerting them to a house fire in Bishopbriggs.

Fire crews from Bishopbriggs and Springburn community fire stations were dispatched to the scene and on arrival the crews were faced with a fire within a two-storey semi-detached house.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus fought the fire with a hosereel jet and searched the property. A male occupant was found to have perished at the scene.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's investigation team along with Strathclyde Police will conduct a joint investigation into the cause. There is no further information available at this time.
