Blaze severely damages Glasgow South Side Church
Langside Parish Church in Glasgow's South Side was left severely damaged this evening as a result of a fire which spread rapidly along the roof of the single storey building.
Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's control centre was inundated with calls reporting the incident shortly after 7pm.
Fire appliances were dispatched to the scene from Polmadie and Castlemilk Community Fire Stations. As the crews approached the place of worship flames were already visible from the roof and thick acrid smoke billowed into the surrounding air.
The Incident Commander quickly ensured that the church interior had been succesfully evacuated before deploying fire crews in breathing apparatus to attack the blaze from within the main body of the church in an attempt to prevent any fire spread. The ensuing conditions forced the crews to withdraw from the church interior and adopt external firefighting tactics using both aerial and ground jets.
Police assisted in the control of local traffic and both services advised local residents to remain indoors and keep their windows closed against the possibility of smoke ingress.
At the height of the fire eight fire appliances and 40 firefighters were in attendance. No emergency service personnel or members of the public suffered any injuries.
The fire is now under control but crews will maintain a presence throughout the night before a joint investigation is launched by both Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and the Police into the cause of the blaze.
There is no further information available at this time.

Farm fire
Fire crews are currently tackling a blaze in an outbuilding at Bankhead Farm near Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire.
Appliances from Coatbridge and Bellshill Community Fire Stations were mobilised to the scene shortly before 10 pm last night and were confronted by an extremely well developed fire which engulfed the entire outbuilding.
The Incident Commander, having ensured that there was no life risk, was severely hampered in bringing the blaze under control due to the very poor water supplies and restricted access for further fire appliances which he requested to extinguish the fire and to ensure that the surrounding farm buildings did not become involved due to fire spread.
Oncoming appliances are being tasked to continuously relay water to the scene from the nearest pressure fed water supply. The duration of the incident will be somewhat extended as a result of these difficulties.
The cause of the fire will be investigated jointly by Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and the Police. There is no further information available at this time.
