Fire in high-rise block

At around 07 45 this morning fire appliances from Clydebank, Maryhill and Knightswood Community fire stations attended a call to a fire to the 11th floor of a 12 storey block of flats at 2214 Great Western Road Glasgow.
On arrival fire fighters were faced with an extremely well developed fire and were informed that the occupier was still in the property.
Attending crews, faced with severe fire, heat and smoke successfully entered the flat, searched and extinguished the fire preventing fire spread to the upper floor of the building.
The occupier of the property had managed to get out of the flat prior to the arrival of the Fire Service and was suffering from severe smoke inhalation.
He was treated by Ambulance personnel at the scene before removal to hospital.
There were no other people at the scene requiring treatment.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue’s Fire Investigation Team are working with Police to identify the cause.

Tenement fire forces evacuation

More than 25 firefighters have this evening been tackling a severe fire in the top floor of a tenement block in Glasgow.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Operations Control received a call at 16:13hrs to the blaze in a four-storey tenement at 720 Dumbarton Road. Residents were safely evacuated.

As at 19:00 hrs the Fire Service presence was being scaled down at the scene. There is no further information at this time.

Fire in South Side scrap yard

Fire Crews from Govan Community Fire Station were mobilised shortly before 6:30 this evening to a reported fire in a scrap metal merchants at King George V docks in Glasgow's south side.

The crews arrived to find an extremely deep seated fire within the smouldering mass of scrap metal which was producing large volumes of thick smoke.

The Incident Commander having tasked his crews to attack the fire was hampered by the poor mains water supply and immediately called for additional resources to overcome this difficulty. The additional appliance, mobilised from Renfrew Community Fire Station, was deployed to supplement the water supplies by lifting water from the adjacent River Clyde.

An onsite mobile excavator was also utilised to grab, break down and disperse the enormous the pile of metal and allow the fire crews to reach the seat of the fire and ensure there was no fire spread to any nearby structures.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue expect to remain at this incident for the next few hours.

Serious road collision in Dumbarton

At approx 22:11 hours on Tuesday 2 Feb 2010, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's operations control received a call to a serious Road Traffic Collision on Stirling Road between Dumbarton and Bonhill, Dunbartonshire.

Two fire appliances from Dumbarton and a Major Incident Unit carrying specialist rescue equipment from Clydebank were quickly mobilised. Upon arrival the Incident Commander was faced with two vehicles involved in a head on collision, and several other vehicles which had to take avoiding action.

The Incident Commander prioritised the rescues, which resulted in 1 adult male who was trapped, being cut free from the wreckage by Firefighters, with a further 4 casualties treated at the scene.
All 5 casualties were transferred to the Royal Alexandra Hospital Paisley by the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Fatal fire in Glasgow

Fire crews from Polmadie and Calton Community Fire Stations were mobilised to a reported house fire in Caledonia Road in the Gorbals district of Glasgow shortly before noon today.

On arrival the incident commander was confronted by a fire in a maisonette type residence within the tenement block. The incident commander having established that an occupier was still within the dwelling tasked firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, to enter the house for rescue and firefighting purposes.

The crews attempted a rescue and fought their way through intense heat and smoke. Tragically an elderly male perished at the scene.

One firefighter suffered slight burns during the course of the incident and has been taken to hospital for treatment by attending ambulance crews.

Fire crews also evacuated residents from adjacent premises as a precautionary measure.

The cause of the fire will be investigated jointly by Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and the Police. There is no further information available at this time.

Fire in Paisley shop

Firefighters from Paisley Community Fire Station were mobilsed to a reported shop fire in Paisley's Greenock Road at 5 a.m. this morning.

On arrival the Incident Commander was confronted with a developing fire which was spreading into the roofspace of the single storey shop.

Fire crews overcame initial access difficulties to the premises using hydraulic cutting equipment and subsequently brought the blaze under control utilising a combination of ground and aerial firefighting jets.

Residents of the adjoining tenement properties, who were evacuated as a precautionary measure, have now been been allowed to return to thier homes.

Strathclyde Police assisted the Fire Service in traffic management of the immediate area.

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and Strathclyde Police will carry out a joint investigation to establish the cause of the fire.

Rescues and fatality in Govan flat fire

This morning at 01:55GMT Strathclyde Fire & Rescue responded to a Ground Floor Flat Fire in Whitefield Road, Govan, Glasgow.

Upon arrival fire crews from Govan & Polmadie entered the premises wearing breathing apparatus, extinguished the fire and rescued a total of five casualties. Two of the casualties were rescued from the top floor flat using ladders.

Three casualties were taken by Ambulance to the Southern General Hospital, with two taken to the Victoria Infirmary, all suffering from Smoke Inhalation.

The Fire Service was later informed of one male fatality from the casualties taken to hospital.

A full investigation into the cause of the fire is being undertaken by Strathclyde Fire & Rescue in conjunction with Strathclyde Police.

Firefighters tackle major Glasgow tenement fire

Firefighters today halted the spread into neighbouring properties of a fire which destroyed the interior of a shop and four flats in a tenement on the south side of Glasgow.

The residents of the flats were evacuated after the fire broke out in the ground floor shop in Southcroft Street, Govan.

The fire was reported to Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Operations Control at 13:03hrs.

Two fire pumps from Pollok Community Fire Station, a pump from Govan and an Aerial Rescue Pump from Cowcaddens were first appliances at the scene. The incident was quickly made a Level 3 (8 pumps)after the fire spread from the ground floor up through the upper three floors and into the roofspace.

At the height of the blaze four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were inside the building, directing four hosereel jets at the flames. Outside, meanwhile, the main jets on two appliances were directed at the fire.

The fire was brought under control at 15:55.

Area Commander Garry Milne, in charge of Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's South Glasgow area, said: "Our firefighters succeeded, in very difficult conditions, in stopping the spread of the fire to adjoining tenements.

"The street was very icy so the firefighters had to make sure they had a sure footing outside the building."
