Refrigerant gas release
At around 12:30hrs today two fire appliances from Clydebank Community Fire Station were mobilised by Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Operations Control Centre. This was in response to a call received from the Scottish Ambulance Service stating that a workman had been exposed to a release of gas from an air conditioning unit.
On arrival at the two-storey office premises at the Business Park, North Avenue, Clydebank, the officer in charge was informed that the first floor of the building was being refurbished and that the workman had inadvertently cut through the building's air conditioning system, resulting in the release of a refrigerant gas stored within the system.
The officer in charge instigated well-established procedures that the service has for dealing with incidents of this nature. This included attendance of the service's Technical Support Unit (TSU) and technically trained officers along with partner agencies.
Initial information transmitted to the scene of operations that the gas (freon) was heavier than air and an asphyxiant advised the officer in charge to evacuate the lower floor of the building (approx 100 people) and maintain this exclusion until an all-clear could be given.
With ventilation of the building taking place, specialist officers wearing protective breathing apparatus and using air sampling equipment are currently ensuring that no traces of the gas are left in low-lying areas.
The workman was taken to hospital for a precautionary check-up. No further information is available at this time.

Motherwell house blaze
At 03:47 this morning Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Operations Control Centre received a call to a dwelling house fire in the Milton Street area of Motherwell. The fire was located in a first floor flat within a block and the initial call stated persons were reported to be missing within the property.
On arrival the Incident Commander was met with a severe fire within the kitchen of the flat. Four firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus sets and carrying hosereel jets entered the property to extinguish the fire and search for any occupants still within the dwelling. The firefighters quickly located and rescued two elderly occupants, one of whom was unconscious, and safely removed them to fresh air outside the property.
Both occupants were given first aid by firefighters and ambulance personnel on scene and were removed to Wishaw General Hospital for further treatment.
Strathclyde Fire & Rescue's Fire Investigation team are in the process of conducting a joint investigation with Strathclyde Police into the cause of this incident.
There is no further information about this incident at this time.
PLEASE NOTE: In this particular incident the fire was located within the kitchen of the flat, with the door from the kitchen to the main hall being in the closed position. This resulted in the vast majority of the fire damage being confined to the kitchen and, importantly, restricted the spread of fire, smoke and hot fire gases throughout the rest of the property during the early stages of the fire development.
The action of the occupiers in ensuring the door was closed prior to retiring to bed for the evening may well, on this occasion, have saved their lives.
Strathclyde Fire & Rescue would like to invite all members of our communities to contact us for further advice and guidance in relation to "bed time routines" or "making a fire plan". We can be contacted on 0800 0731999 and can visit your home free of charge to provide valuable advice on home fire safety.
