One of the common themes that I encountered when talking to our retired members was that a lot of you felt that once you retired a lifetime’s skills and experience were lost to the Fire Service. Many of our members felt that they would like to exercise these skills and still be able to contribute positively to their local communities.

Indeed, in the original form we sent out to our retired colleagues on the pension database, informing them of our intention to start up a Retired Employees Association, we included a question asking if you would like to be involved in Fire Service Volunteer work. From that initial form set-up we received well over 200 positive replies, with many more coming forward at our Launch meeting in September 2006 to offer their services.

As one of the main aims of the Retired Employees Association is to cater for the members’ requirements, this response was more than enough to encourage the Committee to look in to setting up a Volunteer Network. On investigation, we discovered that the only other Fire Service to have a Volunteer Network was Merseyside. Consequently, Ally and I went down to Merseyside to study their Volunteer Network.

Following this visit the concept of a Volunteer Network was written into the REA Constitution and is currently under construction. It is our intention not to make the Volunteer Network a one-dimensional set-up but rather to offer a range of options for REA members to volunteer for – from Community Fire Safety initiatives to visiting elderly forums or disadvantaged groups.

Training and uniforms will be given to update members skills and ensure our members are equipped with the latest up to date information and support.

If you are interested in putting your name forward for the Volunteer Network and getting back into the swing of things within SFR please contact Joe as below to be registered on our Volunteer Database
