Kilmarnock is largest town in Ayrshire and 10th largest in
Scotland, standing in the 2 parishes of Kilmarnock and Riccarton.
Located 15 miles north by Ayr and 23 miles south of Glasgow, the
station turnout area covers approximately 123 square kilometres
which includes Kilmarnock, Crosshouse, Galston, Hurlford,
Crookedholm, Moscow, Fenwick, Kilmaurs, Knockentiber &
Gatehead.
Housing stock is a mix of private/public sector, pre/post war
houses and flats most of which are owner occupied.
The last 2 centuries has seen Kilmarnock develop commercially
through a manufacturing phase from knives, textiles, clothing and
shoes into heavy industries including coalmining, iron founding and
engineering.
Kilmarnock has developed to meet the changing demands of the
commercial sector with many of the traditional industries being
replaced. Presently local employment opportunities are provided
though a mixture of retail, public sector, light engineering and
manufacturing.
